Recipe: Bistek (Filipino Beef Steak)

Preparation Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (including marinating time)

  • 1.5 pounds of beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 large onions, sliced into rings
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste

  1. Combine the soy sauce, lemon juice, minced garlic, and ground black pepper in a bowl. Add the beef slices, ensuring they’re well-coated with the marinade. Let it sit for at least 1 hour.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion rings until they become translucent, then set them aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the marinated beef (reserving the marinade) and cook until browned.
  4. Pour the reserved marinade into the skillet. Cover and let it simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until the beef becomes tender.
  5. Adjust the seasoning with salt if needed, then add the sautéed onions back into the skillet. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. Serve the Bistek hot with steamed rice.
